Typography Questions

1. Briefly explain what typography is

Typography is the art of arranging type in an interesting way to make it aesthetically pleasing.

2. What is leading and kerning?

Leading is the distance from the baseline of successive lines of type. The vertical distance between text. Kerning is the space between each character to achieve a visually pleasing result.

3. What are ascenders and descenders?

An ascender is part of a lower case letter that is taller than the font’s x height. Basically a letter that is taller than the rest of the letters. A descender is the same thing but for letters such as ‘g, y, p, q’

Typographer Research

1. Neville Brody

He is an Alumnus of the London College of Printing and Hornsey College of Art and is known for his work on The Face magazine (1981-1986) and Arena magazine (1987-1990). He also designed record covers for artists as Cabaret Voltaire and Depeche Mode. He created the company Research Studios in 1994 and is a founding member of Fontworks. He is the new Head of the Communication Art and Design department at the Royal College of Art. He is a contemporary because his work is used today.

Here are some examples of his work

2. Edward Johnston

Edward Johnston (11 February 1872 – 26 November 1944) was a british craftsman who is known as the father of modern calligraphy along with Rudolf Koch. He is most famous for designing the sans-serif Johnston typeface with a broad edged pen that was used throughout the London Underground system until it was redesigned in the 1980s He also designed the famous roundel symbol used throughout the system. He is also a contemporary typographer because his London underground designs are still being used today

Here are some examples of his work.

Merchandise Research

Here is research about the different items such as t-shirts, iPhone case etc. I will be doing my own designs for these products.

T-shirts

Here are a few t-shirts that are asap rocky’s own brand.

The designs obviously all relate to him in some way. Photos of him, his name printed out and phrases from songs etc so I could add these onto my own designs but obviously different and unique from these ones. The colours are all black and white because that’s the main colours that represent him. I can design a coloured top but I will probably stick to the black and white. They have very clean and simple looks towards them as well which again works really well. The fonts used on the tops are simple such as the block font with the cracked texture printed on it and then the signature sort of font which is a lot more interesting than the other but plain white. The main focal points on all these tops are the main body where the print is placed and all attention is put there although some of the tops have prints on the back also so you have that as well. The designers intention is to produce a product which relates to asap rocky and promote and show him off. These t-shirts are designed for fans of asap rocky to wear. The thing I least like about the design of the ‘purple swag’ top is the texture of the font.

Phone Cases

Here are some phone cases that look like they have been designed by different people and are not official merchandise of asap rocky but they look pretty cool. Again the same as the t shirts the main focus point on the phone cases is obviously asap rocky again. The fonts on the phone cases are again really simple and have the dollar sign to replace the ‘s’ on asap because it’s his signature thing. The font is laid out by each word to make them stand out and fill space they have also been centred on the case to make it look better and not messy. All these cases are aimed at asap rocky’s fans about ages 16 – anything, I say 16 due to the explicit nature of his music etc. When I design my own phone cases all my designs will be unique and different from the ones above although I will take a few features from the ones above such as the ‘Long live asap’ one, I will do something similar but with a different font and a few more features. Also with the photo cases I will do one of those as well with my own twist. The thing I least like about the designs are the fact that they are all so similar i’m going to make my designs all completely different.

New Brief – My own brief

Today we are starting a new brief which is continuing on from our last brief. I will be continuing with asap rocky and designing merchandise for him such as t-shirts and phone cases. I will start by researching different merchandise that is already in production to give me some ideas for my own designs. I will be researching typographers, iphone case designers and different clothing designers to give me ideas etc
